AI visibility audit: what ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity say about your Calgary business
An AI visibility audit from Matt Edward SEO shows how ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity describe your Calgary business today: how often each one names you across 20 customer questions asked from Calgary, which competitors it names instead, and which sources it cites. It takes 5 business days after you approve the questions.
01Who
Who can audit how ChatGPT and Google AI describe my Calgary business?
Matt Edward SEO can: it’s just me, in Calgary, with the method I use on my own business every week. AI agents I built run the answers and draft the report; I read every page before it goes to you, and walk you through it on a call.
For ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, I sample the answers directly. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode have no official API for this, so I don’t sample them. With your permission, the audit also reports what your own Google Search Console shows for AI Overviews. Gemini is left out because Google’s terms for grounded answers bar analyzing or storing them (Gemini API terms, “Grounding with Google Search”).
02Measures
What does the audit measure?
Five things, for each engine: how often it names you, how often it cites your site, who it names instead, which sources it cites, and how it describes you.
| Measure | What you see |
|---|---|
| Named share | The share of answers that name your business, with a 95% range |
| Cited share | The share of answers whose sources include your website, with a 95% range |
| Who’s named instead | The businesses named in your place, and how often |
| Sources | The pages each engine cited in its answers |
| How you’re described | The engine’s own words about your business, quoted, and whether they’re right |
How it’s measured:
- Questions
- 20 customer questions that you approve before anything runs
- Answers
- 3 per question per engine: 180 answers in all
- Engines
- ChatGPT (gpt-5.4-mini), Claude (claude-haiku-5-5) and Perplexity (sonar), the same pinned models as my public panel, through their official APIs with web search on, called through DataForSEO’s pass-through service
- Location
- ChatGPT and Claude are set to Calgary. Perplexity’s API takes a country, not a city
- Ranges
- 95% Wilson intervals on every share
- Dates
- Every answer is dated
03Deliverable
What do I get?
A report and the raw answers, and you keep both.
- The report: named and cited share per engine with their ranges, who’s named instead, the sources each engine cited, how each one describes you and whether it’s right, and a fix list in priority order.
- The raw answers: every answer in full, with its question, engine, model, date and cited sources.
- A walkthrough call to go through the report with me.
Delivered within 5 business days after you approve the questions.
04Sample
What does an audit result look like?
Like my own baseline: on , ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity named Matt Edward SEO in 1 of 288 answers to my 32 target questions, and cited mattedwardseo.com in none.
For the 8 questions about who to hire in Calgary, the closest match to an audit, the result was:
| Engine | Answers | Named me | Named share | 95% range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 24 | 0 | 0% | 0% to 13.8% |
| Claude | 24 | 0 | 0% | 0% to 13.8% |
| Perplexity | 24 | 0 | 0% | 0% to 13.8% |
Cited share was 0 for all three engines.
The one answer that named me came from Claude (claude-haiku-5-5) on . It listed Matt Edward SEO among Calgary SEO agencies that “may also offer AEO”, and described it as focusing on “local SEO, semantic strategies, and safe link building.”
My reading: Claude can find me, but as an SEO provider, not an AI-visibility one, and ChatGPT and Perplexity didn’t name me in any of their 48 answers to those questions. An audit gives you the same kind of picture for your business. The live version of mine, with who the engines name instead, is on the scoreboard.
05Limits
What are the limits?
The audit measures logged-out answers from the engines’ APIs, which aren’t always what a signed-in person sees.
- Signed-in consumer apps can differ. Someone signed in to the ChatGPT app can get personalized answers that differ from these.
- Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode can only be seen through Google Search Console, not sampled.
- Perplexity is located by country, not by city.
- Answers change from day to day. The audit is a dated snapshot, which is why every number carries a range.
- It covers the questions you approved, not every question a customer might ask.
06Difference
How is it different from an SEO audit?
An SEO audit looks at your website and where it ranks on Google. This audit looks at the answers themselves: what each AI engine says when your customers ask, whether it names you, and which pages it relies on.
07After
What happens after the audit?
You keep the report and the raw answers, whether or not you hire me for anything else.
If you want me to do the work that follows, that’s the SEO + AI visibility plan, and the audit is credited in full to your first month if you start within 30 days. I can’t promise any engine will recommend you after it, and I’ll say so before you start.
Ask for an audit. Tell me your business name and trade, and I’ll send you the draft questions to approve.
08Free check
Can I get a free check first?
Yes. Give me your business name, your trade and your email address, and I’ll email you the result within 2 business days.
The check asks ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity 3 customer questions for your trade in Calgary, 3 times each: 27 answers. The result is your named share and who was named instead. I run each check and read every answer before it goes to you. Your trade and “Calgary” go into the questions; your business name isn’t sent to any AI provider. I match it against the answers afterwards.
